Information for Students

Students from Lehigh University and from other Lehigh Colleges are invited to take advantage of the research and project opportunities available through the Lehigh ISE Outreach Program. There are several ways to get involved – please see below for current project opportunities. For further inquiries, please feel free to reach out to us.

OutreachISE Research projects are semester-long, credit-bearing opportunities for students across different academic disciplines to get involved in systems-related research. Each semester, a variety of projects are available, catering to different aspects of systems engineering, optimization modeling, applied systems analysis and design, and more. Led by faculty from the Industrial and Systems Engineering Department at Lehigh and our collaborator across different departments, the projects allow students to get involved in research during the fall and spring terms.

Students must register for 1, 2, or 3 credits, awarded through the “Lehigh ISE 321: Independent Study” course with the permission of the instructor, prof. Ana Alexandrescu. Students interested in pursuing these opportunities must submit their resume and a statement of interest to be considered for the project opportunities. In addition to the project, students also take part in a Professional Development Seminar, intended to provide exposure to topics of relevance to exploring research-based careers.

OutreachISE Awareness projects are semester-long, credit-bearing opportunities for students across different academic disciplines and levels to get involved in communication and event-planning logistics and operations. Students work in teams or individually to develop audio and video content using the ISE Media Lab, collaborate with the ISE Alumni Academy and the ISE Industry Liaison Program to provide events for the Lehigh ISE community, and engage in outreach initiatives with local middle schools and high-schools. Current projects include:

  • developing a podcast
  • strengthening the collaboration between first year and upper-class engineering students
  • connecting Lehigh ISE students and alumni
  • working on short, interactive, engaging lessons for middle-school students to be introduced to engineering concepts

To get involved in any of these opportunities, students must register for ISE 321. Additional information may be obtained by emailing the OutreachISE Program Director, prof. Ana Alexandrescu.
