Big Ride Day 21

Rapid City, SD Rest Day Next Day Previous Day

Ahhh, another lazy rest day! I slept in this morning later than I have on any day of the ride so far -- 8:45! It's kind of strange that that is the latest I've slept since I'm used to sleeping in much later than that every weekend at home. It's funny how your perspective changes. After eating breakfast, showering, and lounging around a bit, the first thing Doug and I did was go to Schlotsky's for a sandwich. They still have the best sandwiches I have ever tasted and they tasted even better now in the middle of the ride. I think I have made a convert out of Doug too since he agreed that it was the best sandwich he had ever tasted too. I'm sure we will stop at Schlotsky's every chance we get for the rest of the ride. After that, we started riding around looking for a drug store and ended up down by the river (Rapid Creek). For some odd reason, they have a display down there that talks about the Berlin wall and they have an actual piece of the wall there -- a really large piece too. It's strange that they would have that. There was a Fourth of July celebration going on down there too with local music and food -- I looked in but didn't really stay. After our short jaunt, I went back to camp and Doug went to Wal-Mart. I did my laundry, started to get caught up on my journal, and got a little more organized. By the time I was done all that, it was late and we were trying to figure out where to go to dinner. We met another dinner group and ended up driving one of the vans down to the Golden Coral, an all-you-can-eat place. It was excellent food and I got plenty to eat -- fuel for tomorrow's long ride. The only problem was that by the time I got back to camp, it was almost 10:00 and I still had to install new cleats on my shoes (what a chore). I finally got that done and was sacked out while Doug continued to organize for another 45 minutes. I'm planning an early start tomorrow due to the predicted heat. We'll see if it works -- it hasn't so far!
